Colosseum Terrain System
A modular arena terrain system built for fast, enclosed tabletop battles. Designed from the ground up for skirmish-scale gameplay and support-free 3D printing.
How It Started
The Colosseum project began with a simple idea: run an arena-style event at the local gaming club.
At the time, there were no suitable STL terrain options available for this kind of enclosed, fast-paced gameplay. The alternative was buying large amounts of MDF terrain, which was expensive and didn’t offer the look or flexibility we wanted on the table.
So instead, we built our own.
From Concept to System
While re-learning 3D design, the first Colosseum walls and layouts started to take shape. Early renders and test prints were shared with the community, and the response was immediate.
People wanted to know when they could get their hands on it.
That feedback pushed the project further, evolving from a few experimental pieces into a complete terrain system designed for both play and printability.
Built for 3D Printing
From the beginning, the goal was to create terrain that looked great on the table without being frustrating to print.
The Key Principles were:
- Support-free printing wherever possible
- Durable, tabletop-ready designs
- Clean, repeatable components
- Scaled for 28–32mm miniatures
Every piece was designed to be practical, not just visual.
Designed for Arena Play
The Colosseum system is built around enclosed battlefields that bring players into conflict quickly.
With limited space and defined boundaries, every move matters. Positioning, line of sight, and timing all play a bigger role than in open-table games.
Variants & Evolution
As the project developed, different styles and layouts were introduced to expand the system.
Prefab Colosseum
Clean, modular and practical. Designed to look like prefabricated concrete or armoured walls, ideal for quick setup and efficient printing. Damage was added to the walls to add some variety and make them more interesting.
Gothic Colosseum
A more detailed and thematic take, adding visual weight and character to the arena. For this we wanted some more stone looking walls and wanted to incorporate some skulls and gothic arches into the design without overdoing it. The design works well for both fantasy and sci-fi.
From Project to Launch
The Colosseum Terrain System went on to launch as a Kickstarter project, helping to establish Wargame Geeks and bring the designs to a wider audience.
What started as a solution for a local event became the foundation for a growing range of terrain systems.
